Maudslay Arts Center (MAC) will present bluegrass band Breakin’ Strings on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. Come back on Sunday, Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. for The Mystix Unplugged and Danielle Miraglia.
“Summer is just a brief season here in New England,” MAC Director Nicholas C. Costello said, “so come out and enjoy wonderful music at affordable prices in a spectacular natural setting.”
Led by Cliff Gelina and featuring Cody Howe, Sam Acus, Amanda Gelina, Dan Bartly, Kailey Zercher and David Bevins, Breakin’ Strings has performed everywhere from Nashville recording studios to major bluegrass showcases all while staying true to their Maine roots.
“Cliff Gelina, the leader of Breakin’ Strings and frontman, has a powerhouse voice that sounds much like the gifted Chris Stapleton,” wrote Portland Downtown. Breakin’ Strings blends traditional influences with progressive jam-grass flair, creating a show full of energy, emotion, and incredible musicianship.
The Mystix Unplugged is the stripped-down, acoustic side of The Mystix — Boston’s acclaimed Americana ensemble known for their deep soul and Americana catalog rooted in the blues, gospel, and country of the American South. The Mystix traditionally ran six pieces and occasionally nine. The Mystix Unplugged takes a more intimate approach, featuring Jo Lily alongside a trio of seasoned professionals Marco Giovino, Kevin Barry, and Marty Ballou.
Opening for The Mystix Unplugged will be songwriter, guitarist, and roots-blues artist Danielle Miraglia.
“Straddling the line where folk/roots meets rock/blues,” The Boston Globe wrote, “Miraglia has a voice that can go from a raspy come-hither purr to an Etta James-esque powerhouse belt, although she may be best known for her lead thumb — a heavy, thumping strike on her Gibson that’s backdrop percussion in itself.”
Saturday concerts begin at 7 p.m. including Breakin’ Strings on Aug. 8. Sunday afternoon performances begin at 2 p.m. including The Mystix Unplugged with Danielle Miraglia on Aug. 9, and Alex Lee-Clark and The 8tet on Aug. 16.
Saturday performances start at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m. Patio seating (tables and chairs) is $40 while lawn seating (bring your own chairs or blankets) is $35. Children 12 and under are free.
