Maudslay Arts Center Silver Jubilee presents free concert for veterans

“A Salute to Veterans” with Don Campbell

The Maudslay Arts Center Summer Concert Series is proud to conclude its Silver Jubilee season with “A Salute to Veterans,” a free concert thanking our veterans and their families for their service.

Area veterans and Gold Star Families are invited to attend “A Salute to Veterans” with singer-songwriter Don Campbell on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. free of charge upon registration at their local Senior Center.

All veterans will have free admission thanks to the generous donations of area businesses, organizations and individuals with the support of the Amesbury, Merrimac, Newburyport, Salisbury, Newbury, and West Newbury Senior Centers. Veterans’ guests will be admitted at a reduced price of $10, which will be collected at the door.

Veterans wishing to attend must contact the Senior Center in their community to reserve their spots as seating is limited. Wheelchair vans will be provided for veterans who request them.

The afternoon promises to be a wonderful Salute to Veterans and a fitting way to conclude Maudslay Arts Center’s Silver Jubilee. State flags will line the drive up to the concert venue thanks to area Rotary and Lions Clubs. Refreshments will be served free of charge at intermission.

Area elected officials, police and fire chiefs will be on hand, and the program will be filmed. Copies of the film will then be distributed to area Senior Centers.

Don Campbell is an adult contemporary/country crossover and folk-rock singer-songwriter whose uniquely clear and well-delivered presentation of music supports the story in the song and welcomes the audience on board for the ride. Often compared to the sounds of Dan Fogelberg, Vince Gill, and Chris Isaak, Don and his ensembles are based out of New England.

His music is inspired by sources as diverse as the Celtic and Canadian Maritimes music of his family to Dan Fogelberg, Vince Gill, the Beatles and novelist, Stephen King. Writing in genres including adult contemporary, country, Celtic, Christmas, bluegrass, and rock, Campbell has released 12 CDs, most recently a two-disc, 23-song collection, “Kites To Fly: Celebrating the Music of Dan Fogelberg.”

The MAC Summer Concert Series is proud to conclude its Silver Jubilee season with this free concert thanking our veterans and their families for their service.

MAC is a popular cultural and entertainment destination that has served tens of thousands of patrons since its founding 25 years ago in 1992.

Situated in a picturesque corner of the 442-acre Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MAC is best known for its outstanding summer concert series. However, from mid-May through mid-October, it is also a popular setting for special events such as weddings, corporate functions, educational activities, reunions, and more.

It all started back in 1985, when Nicholas J. Costello with the help of other environmentally conscious state legislators realized the purchase of the 500-plus acre Moseley estate by The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts. The purchase effectively saved the property from private developers waiting in the wings to buy this amazing tract of land on the Merrimack River, full of trails and gardens and home to thousands of species of plants.

People came to enjoy simple walks in the beauty and quiet of nature offering something for all our New England seasons. A children’s outdoor theater company emerged along with the perfect setting for marriage ceremonies, picnics, memorial services, and just plain enjoyment of nature’s magnificence.

In 1993, three men of vision were granted a special permit by the state Dept. of Environmental Management. Former Senator Nick Costello, former Mayor Edward Molin and E. James Gaines pooled their ideas, expertise and capital to create the Maudslay Arts Center, MAC.

Maudslay Arts Center is located at 95 Curzon Mill Road, Maudslay State Park,  Newburyport MA 01950. The concerts are held rain or shine, moving to the indoor performance hall adjacent to the patio when weather dictates.
