Maudslay Arts Center Summer Concert Series season featuring jazz, rock, opera, and country opens on July 9 — Tickets now on sale

Amanda CarrThe popular Amanda Carr Group will open the Maudslay Arts Center Summer Concert Series on Saturday, July 9, ushering in a new season with something for every musical taste from classical to jazz, from opera to bluegrass, from country to the Great American Songbook.

The opening show will be a powerful and exciting combination of jazz and soul from vocalist Amanda Carr with saxophonist Cercie Miller. Carr is a multi-styled vocalist/pianist that began professionally as a teenager in the rock and pop genre playing in Boston area nightclubs with later years including jazz and big band, focusing on fresh interpretations of the Great American Songbook and receiving critical acclaim.

She has performed and recorded in the U.S. and abroad, including Australia and England. Twice a feature story by respected writer/author Nat Hentoff in The Wall Street Journal, she garnered global exposure as he hailed her, “…a true jazz singer in a time of wannabes.”

Currently, she is Artist Liaison for the esteemed organization, ‘Boston Women in Media and Entertainment’ authoring a popular online interview series. Carr is an official CBS Radio commentator for Boston’s prestigious annual “Boston Pops July 4th” concert on the Esplanade with WBZ News Radio. With five jazz vocal recordings, global distribution and airplay, Carr continues to perform as a solo artist while remaining a popular guest artist.

Cercie MillerCercie Miller is an active jazz musician, composer, and sideman, performing with many groups and leading her own quartet, The Cercie Miller Quartet. Miller is a co-founding member of Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet, and avant-garde sax quartet, and Girl’s Night Out, a headlining pop-rock band.

The 2016 Summer Concert Series lineup also will include MAC favorites Liz Frame & the Kickers, Opera Night with the Dirk Hillyer Festival Orchestra, The DonCampbell Band, Rebecca Parris, Paul Broadnax, and Donna Byrne. New on this season’s lineup are the New England Tenors, The Bobby Keyes Trio, and Gilson Schachnik Brazilian Trio featuring vocalist Mirella Costa.

Whether you’re sitting under the stars on a moonlit evening, or lounging on a blanket on a Sunday afternoon, the Maudslay Arts Center Summer Concert Series provides the perfect setting for your entertainment pleasure.

Saturday concerts begin at 7 p.m. and include: Amanda Carr with Cercie Miller on July 9, Opera Night with Dirk Hillyer Festival Orchestra on July 16, Liz Frame & the Kickers on July 23, The Bobby Keyes Trio on July 30, The Don Campbell Band on Aug. 13, Rebecca Parris on Aug. 20, and Myanna on Aug. 27.

New England TenorsSunday afternoon performances begin at 2 p.m. and include: New England Tenors on July 10, Hal McIntyre Big Band tribute to Frank Sinatra on July 17, TBA on July 24, Gilson Schachnik Brazilian Trio featuring vocalist Mirella Costa on Aug. 14, Paul Broadnax & Friends on Aug. 21, and Donna Byrne on Aug. 28.

Maudslay Arts Center is located at 95 Curzon Mill Road, Maudslay State Park, Newburyport MA 01950. The concerts are held rain or shine, moving inside to the MAC Concert Barn when weather dictates. The area is sprayed for ticks and mosquitoes.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner, which can be casual or as elaborate as a gourmet meal with tablecloth and flowers and whatever suits the patron’s fancy. Delicious desserts such as seasonal cobblers, brownies, and Hodgie’s ice cream, cold beverages and coffee may be purchased during intermission, all served by dedicated MAC volunteers, who continue to make this non-profit series happen.

Saturday performances start at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m. Patio seating (tables and chairs) is $25, while lawn seating (bring your own chairs or blankets) is $20. Children 12 and under are free.

Sunday performances start at 2 p.m. with gates opening at 1 p.m. General admission is $18 with open seating on the patio and lawn. Tables and chairs are provided on the patio. Children 12 and under are free.

In addition to tickets purchased theough the website, they also may be purchased at the gate or by calling to reserve at (978) 499-0050. Gift certificates also are available.

The series is supported by The Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, dedicated MAC volunteers and patrons, and the staff of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
